What do I do if I've been harassed, discriminated against on the basis of my gender or subjected to sexual misconduct?

You should bring your situation to the attention of the Title IX Coordinator or any of the Deputy Coordinators.

How can I file a complaint?

Complaints should be reported to the Title IX Coordinator or Deputy Title IX Coordinator of the survivor’s choice/preference and/or personal comfort level. The survivor may be a student, faculty, staff or visitor on campus.

You may also contact a coordinator to report discrimination based on violations of federal and state law or regulations, and University policy based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, or veteran status.

What is Title IX?

Title IX refers to Title IX of the Educational Amendments Act of 1972, which amended the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and provides: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance***”. 20 USC 1681.

Title IX prohibits colleges such as Furman University from discrimination on the basis of sex in the provision of its educational and co-curricular programs. Title IX has received most attention in its application to college and high school athletics. However, it applies to all programs and services at federally funded colleges, with few exceptions.

Who are Furman University's Title IX Coordinators?  What do they do?

The University’s Title IX Coordinator is the Assistant Vice President for Human Resources. The Title IX Coordinator has responsibility for overseeing all Title IX compliance, including complaints of sexual misconduct.

All instances of harassment or sexual misconduct should be reported to the Title IX Coordinator or a Deputy Coordinator.
