Full-Semester Trips:

For housing purposes, a full-semester trip is defined as a study away program where students are away from campus for the entire semester.

NOTE: Students living at The Vinings must pay 100% of the housing fee while studying away either fall or spring semester and do not have the option to have another student fill-in for them. The Vinings contract is a one-year contract.

Students who are studying away the full FALL semester have the following options:

  1. Find another student to fill-in and pay for an assignment while studying away. The student filling-in should participate in the Housing Lottery and note the student replacement for spring semester in the comments box provided.
  2. Wait to get a spring assignment in late November during the spring assignments process. No lottery participation is needed.
  3. Participate in the Housing Lottery to secure an assignment and select from the following options:
    • Pay 75% of the housing fee to guarantee a specific spring assignment. Complete the request form above.
      1. Students have no access to the assignment until spring housing opens in January.
      2. Students will automatically be assigned to both semesters during the lottery process. Manual adjustments will be made to cancel the fall assignment by July 1.
      3. Housing and Residence Life will utilize the space as needed during fall semester. Any student assigned to the guaranteed space during fall will check-out at the close of fall semester.
    • Pay 100% of the housing fee to reserve the assignment during the fall semester while studying away. Complete the request form above.
      1. Students have the option to move their belongings into their assignment after the opening of fall housing and prior to leaving for study away.
      2. The reserved space remains vacant during fall semester.
Students who are studying away the full SPRING semester have the following options:
  1. Make arrangements to fill-in for someone studying away fall semester and vacate the fall assignment prior to the holiday break (mid December).
  2. Secure an assignment for fall and spring through the Housing Lottery process. Cancel the spring assignment by the Spring Housing Assignments Request deadline (mid November).

Partial-Semester Trips with Full-Semester Housing Charges:

Students who are studying away part of the semester but will be on campus for nine weeks or longer will be charged the full housing rate for the semester.
  1. Students should participate in the Housing Lottery to secure an assignment for both fall and spring semesters.
  2. Students will have full access to their assignment the entire semester of study away.

Partial-Semester Trips:

For housing purposes, a partial-semester trip is defined as a study away program where students are on campus for eight weeks or less (see options below).

NOTE: The option for a student to fill-in does NOT apply in the case of partial-semester study away programs.

Students who are studying away part of the semester but will be on campus for five to eight weeks will be charged 75% of the housing rate for the semester.

  1. Students should participate in the Housing Lottery to secure an assignment for both fall and spring semesters.
  2. Students benefit from the 75% fee as follows:
    • Housing is secured in advance for the full year in which the student studies away.
    • Students will not be required to change assignments during the year to accommodate their study away trip.
    • Students will be allowed to leave their belongings in their assigned room while studying away.
    • Students can minimize their portion of the housing fee by selecting a lower priced housing option (i.e. participating in the Housing Lottery for a double in the residence halls versus a private bedroom in North Village).
  3. For the 2013-14 academic year, the study away program budget will contribute $2,325 towards on-campus housing per student. This amount equates to approximately 75% of the AVERAGE cost for all on-campus housing options. Student accounts will be billed 75% of the individual's ACTUAL housing cost, which will result in some student accounts having a balance due and some having a credit for the semester. For instance, a student assigned to a double room in the residence halls might receive an account credit while a student assigned to a private bedroom apartment in North Village would owe a balance beyond the program contribution.
  4. In the unusual event of overcrowding, students on these partial study away trips may be required to release on-campus housing for the semester of study away. Hotel accommodations and transportation would be arranged and paid for by the University.

Students who are studying away part of the semester but will be on campus for four weeks or less will be charged 75% of the housing rate for the semester.

  3. For the 2013-14 academic year, the study away program budget will contribute $1,100 towards on-campus housing per student. This amount equates to approximately 35% of the AVERAGE cost for all on-campus housing options. Student accounts will be billed 75% the individual's ACTUAL housing cost. Students can control the balance due by securing a more economical housing option. For example, a student assigned to a double room in the residence halls would have a smaller balance due than a student assigned to a private bedroom apartment in North Village.
  4. In the unusual event of overcrowding, students on these partial study away trips may be required to release on-campus housing for the semester of study away. Hotel accommodations and transportation would be arranged and paid for by the University.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What are the benefits of paying 100% of the housing fee to reserve a fall assignment while studying away?

Pending you are assigned during the housing lottery, this option assures that you will live with people  you know and in the location that you receive in the lottery. You may also move into your assignment prior to leaving for your study away trip and may return to campus prior to the winter holiday break during a designated period.

What are the benefits of paying 75% of the housing fee to guarantee a spring assignment?

This option assures a specific assignment for the spring so that you can study away fall semester and know in advance where you will live and with whom you will live when you return to campus housing spring semester. Guaranteeing a spring assignment, which allows Housing and Residence Life to utilize the space while you are away, is more economical than reserving a fall assignment at 100% of the housing fee.

How do I pay to reserve my fall or guarantee my spring assignment?

You must inform Housing and Residence Life of your intentions by completing the Reserve Fall / Guarantee Spring Form no later than Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at 5:00PM.

Can I request to pay to reserve a fall assignment and then find another student to fill-in for me beyond the deadline?

Unfortunately, you cannot do this because for every student that requests one of these options by the March 12 deadline, we must grant one rising fourth-year student permission to live at The Vinings. Once the Vinings Lottery occurs in late March, the number of Vinings residents is set. If we allowed you to cancel your request to pay to reserve your space after that date, it would create a vacancy in campus housing.

What if I requested to pay to reserve a fall or guarantee a spring assignment, but I do not get the assignment that I want in the Housing Lottery?

You may withdraw that request by submitting an email to housing.lottery@furman.edu. Do not proceed through the remainder of the lottery process and just plan to get assigned next November/December. Housing and Residence Life will contact you via email next fall to make arrangements for spring semester housing.

What does it mean to "fill-in" for another student?

A student may decide to fill-in for another student during the fall while that student is studying away or taking a leave of absence. This is NOT the same as subletting in an off-campus apartment. Students may not sublet their space. The two students making this arrangement MUST notify Housing & Residence Life through their Housing Lottery entry. The student who will not be living on campus for a semester will actually have their assignment canceled and must completely check out. The student filling-in will be properly assigned to the space for that same semester. Once the agreement has been made and the assignments are official, changes can only be made if both parties are in agreement. The only exception to this is if the student originally assigned to the space is no longer studying away or taking a leave of absence. In this exception scenario, Housing & Residence Life will work with the student who was filling-in to obtain another assignment.

How do I find another student to fill-in for me?

We encourage students to utilize the Roommate Finder in OrgSync. Typically, students who are graduating in December or studying away in the spring are interested in filling-in for students gone in the fall. The number of students studying away each semester will not be balanced. Many more students study away in the fall; therefore, few students will be available to fill in.

What should I do once I have found a student to fill-in for me?

The student who will be filling in should enter the Housing Lottery with your group, and your name should be provided in the comments section on Screen #2 as the person who will live in the space for the spring. The system will automatically assign your fill-in to both semesters and manual adjustments will be made to correct the spring assignment by July 1.

Can a sophomore fill-in for me in North Village?

No. Only rising third- and fourth-year students are eligible to fill-in in North Village.

Can I agree to fill-in for another student and then change my mind if a permanent assignment becomes available?

No, not without permission from the student with whom you made the arrangement. Once the agreement has been made and the assignments are official, changes can only be made if both parties are in agreement. The only exception to this is if the student originally assigned to the space is no longer studying away or taking a leave of absence.

Can I decide to pay to reserve a fall or guarantee a spring assignment later if I cannot find another student to fill-in for me?

No, because Housing and Residence Life has already released a rising fourth-year student to live at The Vinings so you could have these options fall semester. Electing to reserve a fall or guarantee a spring assignment is a binding decision.

What do I do if I have not been accepted to a study away program yet?

Submit your intention to live in campus housing by the February 27 deadline. If you know you want to pay to reserve a fall or guarantee a spring assignment, go ahead and submit that form by the March 12 deadline. If you know that you cannot afford that option, you can either try to find another student to fill-in for you (probably from the NV waiting list) or we may have to release the space to someone on the waiting list and reassign you for the spring in November. That is really all you can do at this point since you do not know your plans for next fall and won't know until after the lottery.

What are my options if I am taking a leave of absence?

Your options are exactly the same as a student who is studying away.

If I decide to wait to get assigned in November for the spring, what do I need to do?

Submit your intention to live in campus housing by the February 27 deadline. Do not participate in the Housing Lottery. Housing & Residence Life will contact you via email in October to begin the assignment process for the spring. In the meantime, if you make arrangements with one or more students for the spring, please go ahead and email us that information. You can be assured that Housing & Residence Life will do everything possible to assign you to a desirable space upon your return. However, keep in mind that students returning from study away or a leave of absence are NOT guaranteed a space in North Village.
