How do students request housing for May X?

Students residing on campus for any reason (summer school, work, research, working for the university, etc.) between May 7-May 30, must submit a May X / Summer Housing Application form to the Housing & Residence Life Office by 5 p.m., Monday, April 8, 2013. The application will be available on this website Wednesday, February 20, at 5 p.m.

How much does housing for May X cost?

There is a combined housing and meal plan rate for May X.  The rate is $705, which provides students with campus housing through May 30 and 33 meals in the dining hall.

Can students pay for just housing and not a meal plan?

All students who are registered for class must have a meal plan and will be unable to separate housing and dining charges.

Students who are assigned to campus housing and are NOT registered for a May X class will be charged for housing only. These students have the option for a meal plan and may request one through the Student Business Center. Students who are eligible for this option are those on campus for research, internships, etc. and are not registered for class during May X.

Can students pay by the day or the week?

No, there is one rate for the term and students will have access to their assignment between May 7-30, 2013.  Students may come and go as necessary.  Students participating in a study away trip that meets on campus part of the term must work with their faculty member regarding campus housing and meals.

What are the dining hall hours?

The first meal served in the Dining Hall will be breakfast on Wednesday, May 8. The last meal served will be lunch on Wednesday, May 29.

Do students with a 2013-14 assignment at The Vinings need to register for May X and/or summer housing?

Only students who receive a 2013-14 Vinings assignment through the lottery and want to move directly to The Vinings from North Village should submit a May X and/or summer application. Select May X housing only and The Vinings drop down box. Students who follow this process will be able to remain as "late stays" in North Village until moving to The Vinings no later than May 12, 2013.

Where will students who are on campus for May X ONLY be assigned?

  • Students currently living in the residence halls or in North Village Buildings A through F and Building J will remain in their spring assignment throughout May X. These students may receive a roommate who is re-assigned for refurbishment purposes. There will be no additional charge for May 2-7.
  • Students currently living in North Village G, H, I, and K will be re-assigned to North Village Buildings D, E, or J and will be placed in apartments where students are remaining for May X. Students in G, H, I, and K will be REQUIRED to relocate on May 7 in order to begin refurbishment projects the following day. There will be no additional charge for May 5-7.

What is the process for residents on campus for BOTH May X and summer housing?
  • Students who have a spring assignment in North Village Buildings A, B, C, or F will remain in their spring assignment for both May X and summer with no break in housing. There will be no additional charge for May 5-7.
  • Students who have a spring assignment in North Village Buildings, G, H, I, or K will be re-assigned to North Village Buildings A, B, C, or F for both May X and summer with no break in housing. These students will be required to relocate ON May 7 in order to begin summer refurbishments to G, H, I, and K at the close of spring semester. There will be no additional charge for May 2-7.
  • Students who have a spring assignment in North Village D, E, and J or in the residence halls  will remain in their spring assignment until May 16-18 (see information regarding summer housing for more details). There will be no additional charge for May 2-7.

Why must some students consolidate for May X housing?

Refurbishments will begin on May 8 in North Village Buildings G, H, I, and K, so these areas must be vacant. These displaced students will be consolidated with other students who have vacancies in their room/apartment during May X. Also, some summer conference groups will be on campus during May and consolidating these students from G, H, I, and K with others allows Housing & Residence Life to meet the needs of both students and conference groups.

Do students have to be enrolled to live in campus housing during May?

Students must either be enrolled in a May X course, employed by the University, or participating in an internship (i.e. Furman Advantage) to live in campus housing during the month of May.

What about student-athletes who are still actively competing in their season
?

Student-athletes who are still actively competing with their team will be allowed to live in campus housing until the official season ends. At that point, these student-athletes must move out (within 48 hours of the final competition) or pay the difference in cost for the remaining days in May. The Athletic Department will coordinate the approved list of student-athletes. It is NOT necessary to complete an application for May X UNLESS you need to be on campus for reasons other than competing or if you need housing for summer.

Athletes with a spring assignment in North Village G, H, I, and K will need to move on May 7 (along with other students) in order to begin refurbishment of these facilities. Housing & Residence Life will work with the Assistant Director of Athletics to determine an alternate moving schedule if competition restricts moving on May 7.

When do students check-in and check-out?

Students without a spring semester assignment may check-in on Tuesday, May 7 between 2-10 p.m.

Students here for May X with a spring assignment in North Village G, H, I, or K move to their May X assignment on May 7. Students assigned to these buildings who are participating in both May X and summer housing should also plan to relocate on May 7.

May X keys may be picked up on Tuesday, May 7 between 2:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. at the May X RA Office (located in the Housing & Residence Life Office @ Estridge Commons). Students should complete their moves and return spring assignment keys to the May X RA Office by Tuesday, May 7 at 10 p.m.

Students MUST be available to move on May 7 in order for refurbishments to begin the following day. Housing cannot be flexible to accommodate moving on other dates. PLEASE PLAN AHEAD.

Do I need a parking permit and where do I park during May X?

Resident parking zones will not be enforced during the May Experience session or summer sessions.  If you have a current parking permit, you may park in any of the residence parking areas.  All other traffic and parking regulations will be enforced.  If you do not have a current parking permit, you must go to the Student Business Center to purchase one.

Do the same policies and procedures apply during May X?

Yes, The Helmsman (Student Handbook) applies to all residents during May X.

Is it alright for my old roommate and/or friend(s) to unofficially live with me?

No.  Only students who have officially requested and been approved have permission to live in campus housing during May X.  If students are found violating this policy, both students will be assessed and the unofficial student will be required to leave.

Where is the RA office during May X?

The RA office will be located in the Housing & Residence Life office in Estridge Commons and will be open during May X as follows:

Monday thru Sunday 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The Housing & Residence Life office will be open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.  For lockouts outside of these posted hours, please contact University Police at 294.2111.

Should I be concerned about safety and security with a reduced number of students on campus?

Furman students are encouraged to always be vigilant about their own personal safety as well as the security of campus housing, regardless of the time of year.  Below are some tips to practice:

  • ALWAYS lock your bedroom/apartment door.
  • Do NOT leave windows open, especially on ground floors.
  • Do NOT prop exterior doors in the residence halls.
  • Report any suspicious activity to University Police immediately.
  • Evacuate the building for EVERY fire alarm that sounds.
  • ALWAYS lock your car doors and do not leave expensive items within view.

Do I still have free laundry privileges?

Yes, the laundry rooms will be available to students for no additional charge during May X.

Will Furman University staff access my May X housing assignment?

Entry into apartments and residence hall rooms may be necessary following the official spring semester closing on May 2 (residence halls) or May 5 (North Village & Greenbelt Community).

Starting May 6, staff will be conducting damage inspections, patching, painting and completing repairs as necessary.  Facilities Services will be changing air filters and may be completing follow-up repair work.  Contract cleaning will occur in all buildings following closing; however, deep cleaning occupied apartments will be scheduled only if necessary. Notification and a directional e-mail will be sent in advance if cleaning is required.

We apologize for any inconvenience; however, we must take advantage of any window of opportunity to complete repairs within campus housing to prepare for May X, summer housing and hosting summer camps and conferences.  Every effort will be made to not enter occupied areas until 10 am or later.  Thank you in advance for your understanding and patience as we maintain our residential areas to benefit all residents and guests.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Housing & Residence Life office at 864.294.2092.
