Study Diversity Diversity and Inclusion Furman University

There are plenty of opportunities to learn about diversity from our student clubs and organizations. But we also give you the opportunity to explore diversity through an academic lens. We offer specific majors and minors that focus on exploring cultures, histories, and intellectual traditions that shape experiences in a pluralistic world.

African American and African diaspora cultures

Inspired by the pioneering work of one of our students, this minor celebrates the contributions of the African diaspora to North and South American cultures. Study African Culture.

Asian studies

Our Asian Studies program takes an interdisciplinary approach to prepare you for a career at home or abroad. We offer the Bachelor of Arts degree with three majors focusing on Asian Studies, Chinese Studies, and Japanese Studies. Study Asian Culture.

English for speakers of other languages

English has become the international language of business, science, technology, and travel. We'll give you the tools you need to teach adult literacy, English overseas as a foreign language, or in America as a second language. Study English.

Latin American studies

The Latin American Studies minor combines a language requirement in Spanish with an array of course options in multiple departments, including study away courses taught in two different regions of Latin America—South America (Chile) and Mexico/Central America. Study Latin American culture.

Middle East and Islamic studies

Middle East and Islamic Studies at Furman is rooted in the disciplinary methodologies of distinct fields of political science, history and religion. Students completing the minor will be equipped with interdisciplinary tools of analysis through an introduction to an increasingly complex and diverse part of the world. Study the Middle East.

Poverty studies

This interdisciplinary minor will bring you face-to-face with the reality of poverty. You'll confront one of the oldest and most intractable problems confronting human societies locally, nationally and globally from a variety of academic disciplines, and engage the subject directly through a summer internship. Study poverty.

Women's, gender, and sexuality studies

One of Furman’s oldest academic minors, Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies will encourage you to reflect on the difference people’s experiences of gender and sexuality make to our intellectual traditions and understanding. Study women's, gender, and sexuality topics.

World Cultures General Education Requirement

One of the goals of our academic program is to get you to see things from multiple perspectives. To achieve this, we have created a general education requirement that will allow you to take a class in global awareness. By fulfilling this requirement, you may opt to take a course that focuses on world cultures.
