Career Fair Preparation

Tips on attending a career fair

Reasons to attend a career fair
Regardless of your major, year in college, or future goals, there are numerous benefits to attending the career fair. Some of the more common reasons are highlighted below:
    • Increase your chances of receiving an interview with an employer. Recruiters will be looking for those who make a good first impression to invite for interviews.
    • Learn about internship and full-time employment possibilities.
    • Recruiters will be looking to identify underclass students to track until graduation. Employers expect to interact with students seeking employment as well as those simply researching careers and employers.
What to wear
    • Employers expect students look the part.  If you are job-seeking (as opposed to information gathering) professional attire is expected. Seniors seeking post-graduate job opportunities are strongly encouraged to treat this as a screening interview (because it is!) and wear a business suit! Underclass students seeking information and/or internships don't necessarily need to wear a suit but should still wear something other than shorts and a t-shirt.  Khaki pants, dress/skirts, collared shirts, and similar attire are appropriate.
What to bring
    • If you are job seeking, a resume is strongly recommended.  Cover letters are not necessary. If you are merely information gathering and not looking for jobs a resume is not needed.
    • A quick "elevator pitch" about yourself.  In a short conversation you should introduce yourself, tell the recruiter your major, your work experience and your career interests. Keep this brief...15 or 20 seconds.  Recruiters don't want to hear your entire life's story.
    • Questions.  Asking questions about an employer and their career opportunities conveys interest.  Have some questions in mind when you meet recruiters.
    • A smile and positive attitude.  Recruiters will pick up on your nonverbal communication.
Before the career fair
Target your top companies. Get a list of the companies/organizations who will be attending the career fair and plan your strategy for which companies you would like to visit. Take time to research the organizations in which you are most interested. However, give yourself time to meet with most of the employers who attend the fair. You will probably be surprised at the opportunities offered by employers that you don't know much about.
