What is sustainability?
Sustainability explores the dynamic relationships among social, economic and environmental systems in order to enhance long-term quality of life. At Furman, we recognize sustainability as an interdisciplinary concept promoting values, systems, and activities that are ecologically sound, environmentally conscientious, socially just and economically viable. We also understand sustainability is a journey, not just a destination. This understanding permeates our campus culture and how we make decisions across the university. We have embarked on a journey to operate the campus in increasingly sustainable ways; become more conscious about how we use our resources; and deepen our commitment to educating our students for sustainability. Sustainability has become a dynamic element of Furman's institutional identity and ongoing journey.
