One of Furman’s educational goals is to teach the ethics of sustainability and graduate global citizens who act sustainably in their professional as well as personal lives. Our students continually take the reins on these issues through student-led groups and initiatives.
Environmental Action Group
A student-led, non-partisan group committed to environmental advocacyand education. By promoting stewardship of local and global resources, the group strives to protect the planet for the people of tomorrow.

Furman Global Issues Forum
Furman Global Issues Forum is an experimental, student-led initiativecreated to engage and involve the campus community in addressing thechallenges of an increasingly globalized world. The group sponsors a different series of events each semester to raise awareness of one particular global issue. Events range from lecture series anddiscussions to campus displays like the 2012 Water Walk.
Furman in the Garden
Furman in the Garden is a student-led organization devoted to promoting sustainable agriculture. In the fall semester, volunteers work on Furman Farm and in the spring, they work in the greenhouse sowing and transplanting for both the farm and the annual plant sale. Community members can also volunteer to help with gleaning and planting organic gardens at both Habitat for Humanity houses and local schools.
Bartram Society
The Bartram Society is a student-led group within the Earth and Environmental Sciences department. The group volunteers for service projects, attend lectures and go on trips to nearby parks with the goal of conserving and enjoying our natural resources.
