What happens after you submit

So now that you have submitted your choices, you have to be wondering, how does the ICE Machine actually work? Once we have reached the ICE submission deadline, we work expeditiously to get all choices properly fed into the giant, but not necessarily evil, ICE processor. When we hit the button to start the process…

  1. Our processing algorithm randomly assigns a number to all students that submitted choices within priority groups determined by your class standing and your CLP attendance at the beginning of the current term (senior, junior, sophomore, freshman).
  2. Based on these randomly-assigned numbers, the ICE process creates what amounts to a line with you “standing” somewhere in it for each priority group.
  3. For each priority group, a separate “line” is processed. When it is your turn in line, the algorithm reviews your choices in the order you specified until it successfully registers you for a course section (or runs out of choices).
  4. When you're registered for your first course section, it’s then moves on to the next person in line.
  5. When the process reaches the end of the line, it starts over again at the tail end of the line and works back through the entire priority group in the opposite direction.

If it’s your turn in line, the system goes through your choices until it can register you for a course. Once you have been assigned a course, it’s the next person’s in line turn. That way, everyone should have one course before anyone else is assigned a second and so on. The process keeps going back and forth through the line for your group until it has exhausted every choice for every student.

All of what was just described is automated. Department chairs, Deans, the Directors of Academic Assistance and Disability Services (and advisors even) then review the ICE results manually to be sure that no huge mistakes have been made. We can add or remove sections at this point to accommodate situations where demand has outpaced supply or vice versa. We will add students to newly created sections if this is consistent with the choices they have provided to us. Once the manual review is complete, course schedules are released and CAP (the course adjustment process) begins. We expect all students to routinely participate in CAP to update and revise their schedule all the way through the first seven class days each semester in conjunction with their advisors.
