Furman students may apply for a wide range of travel study opportunities that represent engaged learning at its best. Furman's study away programs seek to cultivate in students values embodied in the university's mission: openness, honesty, tolerance and mutual respect, civic responsibility, global awareness, and bold intellectual inquiry. Students who study away have the opportunity to grow, mature and compete in a complex, rapidly changing and globally interdependent world.

Some additional benefits may include:

  • Increase self-confidence, self-reliance, and independence. Living abroad necessitates the development of certain life skills students can't nurture without this unique opportunity.
  • International experience is an impressive resume note, especially in today's competitive job market and global society.
  • International experience helps students truly understand what it means to be a citizen of their country, while gaining new world perspectives and exploring different belief and value systems.
  • Some programs foster fluency in another language through immersion in the host culture.

Faculty-led programs

Furman offers faculty-led travel study programs well-suited to different majors, interests, and goals. The advantages of these programs include: applications of Furman financial aid to participation; academic credit meeting major and/or GER requirements; an on-campus orientation; and, in many instances, an in-depth exploration of the destination country before departure. Because Furman's professors act as directors for the program, you can count on their expertise and experience. In sum, Furman's travel study programs are consistent with Furman's highest standards of academic excellence, and emphasize a participatory approach to learning. All programs incorporate group travel and site visits into the academic curriculum, and some offering internships and service learning components.

Affiliate and exchange programs

For students whose goal is to explore for a semester or a year, Furman offers affiliate and exchange programs. While the academic rigor and level of student support meet Furman's standards, students must take more personal responsibility for program planning and personal safety than on faculty-led travel study. Students enroll in courses with non-Furman peers and on-site support is provided by offices at other universities rather than by Furman. Upon pre-approval of coursework by Academic Records, transfer credit is awarded for participation.

Study away cost

Program costs vary greatly, so it is important to be sure that you learn the approximate program cost and your ability to pay before you commit to participate. Your program director or coordinator will be able to give you a cost estimate. All programs require a deposit to confirm participation.

The cost of a fall and spring semester faculty-led programs is equal or within several thousand dollars of Furman tuition, room and board; financial aid applies as it would to a semester on campus. Most programs include the cost of international airfare from a specified location, tuition, lodging, and meals. Plan to bring spending money for souvenirs, meals on your own, and personal travel.

The comprehensive tuition fee paid in the fall and spring semesters covers the credits earned during faculty-led May Experience programs. However, other program costs related to travel are the responsibility of the student. Affiliate program costs can vary widely and financial aid is not always available.

Exchange program participants pay what they would for a semester at Furman, with programs varying as to whether the cost of room and board is part of the exchange agreement. Financial aid applies as it would on campus.

Your role in the study away process

It's important to remember that while study away can be a transformative experience, there are many very successful students who do not study abroad during their collegiate career. The experience can be very intense physically, emotionally and socially, so students with certain types of health conditions may choose to focus more on the academic experience and personal growth obtained through their on-campus experiences. Students pursuing multiple majors, pre-professional academic loads, student-athlete obligations, internships, or undergraduate research opportunities may have a difficult time finding a program that fits well into their already demanding schedule. Finally, Furman's study away programs are competitive. There are usually more applications to each program than spots available. For this reason, flexibility is very important. Students are advised to be prepared to apply to multiple programs and/or in multiple years to have the best chance of being selected for this opportunity.

Regardless of whether a student studies abroad, there are many other ways to gain international exposure and develop the related skill-sets on campus. Furman offers a wide range of coursework on foreign languages and international perspectives on many academic disciplines. Cultural Life Programs, or CLPs, frequently offer global perspectives. Finally, Furman has a large international student body; there is no better way to learn about another culture and country than through a friendship with someone from that place.
