Frequently Asked Questions

Students should begin looking for summer internships between November and February.

Who is eligible for the Furman Advantage program?
Preference for fellowships will be given to students who will graduate in December or May after the internship summer, then to students who will have another summer to pursue an internship during their Furman career. Students must be returning to Furman as a full-time student after their internship to be eligible for Furman Advantage.

What does full-time mean?
Internships must be full-time (35-40 hours per week) for a minimum of 8 continuous weeks.

How much are the fellowships?
Stipend amounts awarded to the student will vary based on the amount of pay provided by the sponsoring organization and the student's demonstration of financial need. The base stipend for internships will be:
Organization Payment
$0-1,500
$1,500-$2,900
$3,000 or more
Furman Advantage Stipend for Student
$1,500
$3,000 minus Organization's Payment
$0

What does the internship organization have to do for the Furman Advantage program?
The internship organization must complete the Organization section of the application and submit it directly to the Internship Office (and cc: the student) by the Furman Advantage deadline or as soon as possible in March. The program also requires that the organization complete an on-line evaluation (sent via e-mail) at the end of the summer internship.

If I work on the Furman campus during the summer, am I eligible?
Internships on the Furman University campus will not be eligible for a Furman Advantage fellowship.

What if I have applied for an internship, but haven't received an offer by the Furman Advantage deadline?
You can still apply. You should complete only the student section of the application, listing each potential internship and the descriptions and submit it by the deadline--the application will be filed as 'pending' until the other sections are submitted. Then, once the internship is finalized (you will have several weeks in March before the committee completes their review):  1) update the student section to answer all the questions for the internship you have accepted and re-submit it to the Internship Office, and 2) have the organization and faculty member complete their sections and submit it directly to the Internship Office.  The Furman Advantage committee does not review applications until all sections have been submitted.

Will an international internship be eligible for a fellowship?
Yes, however, applications for international internships in areas listed on the government sanction list http://www.treas.gov/offices/enforcement/ofac/programs/ or on the State Department Travel Warning List http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_1764.html will not be eligible for the Fellowship Programs.

Can I get credit for my summer internship?
Receiving a fellowship from the Advantage Program does not prohibit students from participating in a Furman University summer internship course (which will require payment of summer tuition). Students must consult individual academic departments for the course requirements.

Can I take course during the summer (other than the Furman internship course)?
Students who apply for Furman Advantage and want to take additional summer courses (beyond the Furman internship course) must include information about the courses when submitting the Furman Advantage application and explain how the student plans to meet the requirements of both the full-time internship and the course work during the summer.

When will I know if I am approved for a Furman Advantage fellowship?
Once the application is complete: the student, organization and faculty sections are all submitted; the Furman Advantage Committee (made up of faculty members) will review the application. Notification of the status of your application will be sent to you by e-mail after the committee meetings, which occur between mid-March and mid-April.  Approved students will then be asked to attend a meeting in April to complete the paperwork required for the fellowship.
If I get a fellowship, what am I required to do?
Furman Advantage fellows are required to post weekly to a conference, complete a reflection paper and an evaluation at the end of their internship and be available to speak about their summer experiences as requested and on Furman Engaged Day.
If you have any further questions, please contact Susan Zeiger in the Internship Office.
