Furman University strives to provide you with benefit options that meet the needs of yourself and your family. This overview is for full-time employees with details available in the Office of Human Resources.
- Retirement Plan
Employees who are eligible for the retirement plan will be eligible to receive contributions from the University on the first day of the month after two (2) continuous years of service at the University and after attaining age 21. If an employee has prior service at another eligible employer or has tenure at Furman University, these time frames may differ.
Contributions by the University are applied to individual annuities or accounts by TIAA. The University's contributions to this retirement plan will be made every pay period during the years of participation, except for times in which no salary is paid, in accordance with the following schedule:
7.5 % of salary after 2 years of employment
12.5 % of salary after 7 years of employment
In addition to the percentage paid by the university, the employee may make tax deferred contributions to the retirement program on a voluntary basis beginning the first of the month after 60 days of his/her employment. To change retirement contribution, go to the MyFurman portal A-Z Index for the TIAA (403(b) Retirement Plan) website link.
- Tuition Scholarships
The University makes tuition benefits available after two years of service to full-time employees and their eligible dependents in three major categories. Only one of the three options is available at a time. See Tuition Benefit Policy for details. If you have any questions regarding the Tuition Benefit programs offered, please contact Valerie Holliday at email@example.com.
1. The University makes available Furman tuition scholarships to full-time faculty or staff and their dependents that meet the admissions requirements for the undergraduate or graduate programs at Furman and are enrolled to complete a degree.
2. The University participates in the tuition exchange programs for dependent children of full-time faculty and staff with other private colleges of the Associated Colleges of the South and with colleges in the Tuition Exchange, Inc. Dependents are eligible to apply for a Tuition Exchange award, but are not guaranteed a scholarship.
3. The University provides a cash tuition scholarship to dependent children of full-time faculty or staff who are full-time students pursuing a degree at an accredited undergraduate two-year or four-year college or university.
In addition, the University provides a Job Related Tuition Reimbursement Benefit to all full-time staff who attends accredited colleges or universities and takes job-related courses. The University will reimburse the employee up to $250 per semester and up to a maximum of $500 per year for courses that have been pre-approved by the department manager and a Human Resources representative. A grade of "C" or better must be obtained to receive reimbursement.
- Workers Compensation
Compensation insurance will pay the employee's medical bills and will pay 100% of the salary as long as the employee's disability continues. The entire premium is paid by the University.
- Payroll Direct Deposit
New employees will have their pay deposited directly to their bank accounts. The form is available on the MyFurman Portal for employees who wish to make changes to their direct deposit.
- Bank ATMs On Campus
Automatic tellers for Bank of America and Wells Fargo are located in the lower level of the Trone Student Center across from the Post Office.
To review your benefits and make changes, go to the Workday system, via the MyFurman portal. Benefits can be reviewed by clicking the Benefits Worklet on your homepage of Workday. To view more detailed information, go to the Insurance Benefits page to access the Benefits Guide.
- Medical Insurance Options
You have the option of choosing between three different plans provided through Cigna Health Care. A summary of the medical coverage plans are available on the Benefits Guide located on the Insurance Benefits page. In addition, you have access to Telehealth Connection as a benefit of being enrolled in one of the medical plans. Furman and the employee share the cost of these plans.
- Dental Insurance Options
There are two dental insurance options provided through MetLife. Both options cover preventative care as well as basic and major dental treatment. One option also includes orthodontia for dependent children. Dental insurance is funded by the employee.
- Vision Care Insurance
Employees may enroll in a VSP Vision Care plan. You will get great savings on your eye exam and eyewear, and discounts on laser vision correction. Vision insurance is funded by the employee.
- Flexible Spending Accounts
Furman employees have the option of participating in a Flexible Spending Account for Medical and/or Dependent Care Expense Reimbursement. Payroll deductions for the FSA plans are subtracted from your gross income before taxes are calculated; therefore, reducing the tax amount on your paycheck. Enrollment in these plans takes place once a year (during November open enrollment) so employees can define their payroll deductions for the next calendar year.
- Health Savings Account (only available with HDHP Medical Plan)
Furman employees enrolled in the HDHP medical plan have the option to contribute to their Health Savings Account to help pay for medical, dental, and vision costs with pre-tax earnings. Payroll deductions for the HSA plan are subtracted from your gross income before taxes are calculated; therefore, reducing the tax amount on your paycheck. Enrollment in these plans takes place once a year (during November) so employees can define their payroll deductions for the next calendar year.
As a part of enrolling in the HDHP medical coverage, Furman automatically contributes money (amount based on the coverage tier) to an employee’s HSA.
- Basic Term Life/AD&D Insurance
Term life insurance equal to one and one-half times annual earnings rounded to the nearest $1,000 is provided for all benefit-eligible employees (maximum $400,000; minimum $5,000) through Unum. This term life includes Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance coverage. AD&D insurance provides coverage in the event of an accident resulting in dismemberment or death. Dependent life insurance of $10,000 is available for the spouse of an employee and up to $10,000 for each dependent child, depending on the child's age. Furman pays the premiums for the employee life policy. Furman and the employee share the cost of any dependent life coverage.
- Additional Term Life Insurance
Optional term life insurance is available through Unum. The premium is based on the amount of coverage selected and the age of the insured. Term Life Insurance is funded by the employee
- Disability - Long Term
The long-term disability benefit program is required for all benefit eligible employees. The monthly income benefit, including any income benefits payable from Social Security for the employee or dependents, Worker's Compensation, and any disability benefits payable under any insurance or retirement plan sponsored by the University, is equal to 60 percent of the covered monthly salary as of the date the disability began (maximum $12,000 monthly). Monthly benefit payments begin after 90 calendar days of continuous total disability. Premiums are paid by the employee.
- Disability - Short Term
Short-term disability insurance is available to full-time staff. The plan will help provide financial security in the event of disability caused by injury, sickness, or pregnancy. The plan will provide coverage after seven consecutive days of approved absences with a doctor's certification and will provide weekly payments for up to 13 weeks of disability. The plan provides a weekly income benefit equal to 60% of your base salary, up to a maximum weekly benefit of $1,000. Premiums are paid by the employee.
- Cancer Insurance Option
Cancer insurance, which covers medical costs associated with cancer treatment and pays directly to the employee, is available as an option. This insurance pays in addition to the group medical insurance coverage and is funded by the employee.
