Our History Heller Furman University

Founded in 1965 by six students, Heller Service Corps is now Furman's largest student organization. Each year, we connect more than 1,800 students to over 50 agencies across Upstate South Carolina.

Heller Service Corps was originally called the Collegiate Educational Service Corps. Over the years, the organization has grown exponentially and demonstrates Furman's commitment to serving the community and improving the lives of others.

Max and Trude Heller Endowment

In 2002, civic and community leaders announced that the Collegiate Educational Service Corps would be supported by a new $1.5 million endowment from Max and Trude Heller. The Heller family has a rich history of  service to the community. Max Heller serviced as Greenville's mayor from 1971-79, and was influential in reshaping downtown's Main Street. The Friends of Max and Trude Heller endowed the Furman service organization, reflecting the new name of Heller Service Corps.

national Awards and Recognition

Heller Service Corps has been repeatedly recognized for its community service efforts:

  • National Volunteer Award from The National Center for Voluntary Action, 1972
  • President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction, 2008, 2009 and 2013
