Minutes: Policies and Procedures Committee

Present: DeJong (chair), Gabbert (recorder), Horney, Chesebro, Lewis, Pierce, Byrnes, Delancey
Minutes from 11/19/08 were provided and approved.

Updates from L. DeJong:
196.5 News and Media Relations was approved by the faculty on 12/4/08
228.1 Tuition Benefits for Faculty and Staff was presented to faculty on 12/4/08 for vote in February.
111.1 Division of Continuing Education and 111.11 Director of Continuing Education sent
back to Brad Bechtold for revisions.
106.0 Furman University Intellectual Property policy will be reviewed by a newly formed
faculty committee.
107.3 Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean will be reviewed by Kazee and Beckford
based on the new Provost/Dean positions.
198.2, 168.1, 148.1, 187.5, and 147.9 were returned by Status and will be reviewed in January.
121.2 Committee Service is still being worked on by Status.

File 111.9 Director of Financial Aid
The policy statement was modified to remove reference to the Financial Aid Committee and to move the
responsibility of determining guidelines for awarding scholarships to Guideline 2. Several other wording
suggestions and punctuation suggestions were made. The policy will be sent to originator for final
approval and will be sent to faculty for approval.

File 217.8 Student Records
DeJong will ask the following questions of Brad Barron, Linda Bartlett, and Connie Carson:
Does this policy need additional review pending new FERPA guidelines coming out in January?
Is it possible to remove details and simply reference the Furman website where the FERPA laws are explained?

File 291.1 Approval of Students for Campus Jobs
Some minor editing changes were suggested. Guidelines were renumbered. Guideline 4 was reworded
to be consistent with the policy statement. The policy will be sent to originator for final approval and
rationale statement and will be sent to faculty for approval.

The next meeting of the Policies and Procedures Committee will be January 21st at 3:30pm.
