Food Systems Furman University

A food system is an interconnected web of activities, resources, and people that extends across all domains involved in providing human nourishment and sustaining health, including production, processing, packaging, distribution, marketing, consumption, and disposal of food. The organization of a food system both reflects and responds to social, cultural, political, economic, health, and environmental conditions. A food system can be identified at multiple scales, from a household to a village to a nation to the globe. Source: The University of Vermont.

In 2012, Greenville County completed a Food System Assessment.  As part of the assessment, County Planner Scott Park created this model of a food system that provides a useful way to visualize the various interconnections within the food systems web.

This website serves as a centralized portal for the Furman community on the topic of food systems. Here you will find a summary of faculty research projects, available resources, and faculty teaching materials. The hope is that the site can be used to enhance food systems education on campus and facilitate connections and research among faculty around this topic.
