LD Johnson Lecture Series

The L. D. Johnson Lecture series was established in honor of the life and work of the late L. D. Johnson, chaplain at Furman from February 17, 1967 to December 20, 1981. It is an appropriate honor, since for so many years he blessed the Furman community with his example, leadership, love and support.

Dr. Johnson often called on Furman, individually and collectively, to stop and consider who we are and what we are about. An article that appeared in the Asheville (N.C.) Citizen on December 23, 1981, a few days after his death, included these words which have inspired the title and substance of this lecture series: "Dr. L. D. Johnson knew what really mattered."

The lecture series each year brings to the forefront one Furman faculty member or administrator and one alum to discuss, in his or her own way, "What Really Matters."

Upcoming Lectures:

Fall 2012 (November 8) Melinda Menzer, Professor of English

Melinda Menzer received her B.A. from Williams College and her Masters and Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. She came to Furman as barely more than a child and is in her 17th year on the faculty, having been tenured in 2002, and promoted to full professor in 2010. Her research interests revolve around two poles: the history of linguistic thought and the importance of reading medieval texts in their manuscript context.  She has published on works by Ælfric of Eynsham and by Byrhtferth of Ramsey and has recently completed a project on the glosses on BL, Cotton Faustina A.x.

Melinda teaches English department courses in linguistics and early medieval texts, as well as a regular First Year Writing course for Freshman entitled “Who Speaks Bad English?”

Melinda can be found weekdays at lunchtime at the pool at the PAC. She has done a number of open water swims, including the Alcatraz Sharkfest swim and the Lowcountry Splash. She currently serves on the board at Temple of Israel where she regularly teaches Hebrew at the religious school.

She has two lovely children, Delia and Miles, and one lovely husband, Tim. Melinda is not very good at sitting still or keeping her mouth shut, so she brings her knitting to meetings to keep her from doing or saying things everyone will regret.
