The Shi Center: Leadership in Sustainability Education and Stewardship
The Shi Center for Sustainability is a nationally recognized academic center dedicated to promoting the study of sustainability. Furman has developed a national reputation for its innovative approach to sustainability, which includes teaching and research, campus operations, student development and community interaction. Furman introduced a sustainability master plan in 2009, and in 2010 it broke new ground again by becoming the first private liberal arts institution to approve an undergraduate degree in Sustainability Science.
In addition, the Shi Center has launched an array of programs centered on providing enriching opportunities for students, faculty, and the community to work together to address issues related to economic growth and development, environmental stewardship, financial stability, quality of life, and community well-being.
Students participate in sustainability research in India.
The Shi Center’s programs include faculty development experiences, fellowships for students to engage in service and research on campus and in the community, an annual speakers series, and a Community Conservation Corps. Through these programs, Furman is preparing students for a new marketplace, supporting faculty in expanding their teaching and research interests, and building stronger connections with the greater Upstate community.
