Conduct & professionalism
Professional conduct
The University Police Staff is committed to
providing courteous, excellent service to the Furman community. Your
thoughts and comments are very important to us, so please, don't
hesitate to contact us. The quality of the service is dependent in part
on feedback from the community we serve. The University Police Department
has an extensive professional standards process in place to respond to
citizen complaints and concerns. The department also likes to recognize
outstanding performance by our employees.
Please assist us to improve our department by
bringing your complaints, compliments and suggestions to the attention
of any of the following individuals in a timely manner:
Officer authority
University Police Officers at Furman University
receive their law enforcement authority from the State of South Carolina
(Title 59, Chapter 116). This law provides campus police officers with
law enforcement jurisdiction on the campus at which they are employed
and the streets and roads through and contiguous to the campus
property. The officers must complete the law enforcement officers
certification training at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in
Columbia, SC prior to performing police duties, just as other law
enforcement officers in South Carolina.
Working relationships with law enforcement agencies
Furman's University Police Department could not
complete its mission without the working support of area law enforcement
agencies. The campus is in the jurisdiction of the Greenville County
Sheriff's Department. The roadways adjacent to the campus are in the
jurisdiction of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. You will often see
both Greenville County Sheriff's Department Deputies and Troopers from
the South Carolina Highway Patrol working at campus athletic events and
other activities. The department has also worked with and had the
support of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, the Federal
Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Customs, U.S.
Postal Inspectors, U.S. Marshal's Service, and the many local law
enforcement agencies throughout the upstate. Periodically, the University Police Department will host law enforcement training programs for these
various agencies on Furman's campus.
