SCCTA Director, Dr. Lane J. Harris

The South Carolina Center for Teaching about Asia (SCCTA), headquartered at Furman University, is associated with the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA) funded by the Freeman Foundation.

The purpose of SCCTA is to work with South Carolina school districts to enhance instruction on Asia throughout the curriculum, especially in world history, social studies, geography, and language arts courses. The faculty teams working with SCCTA seminars are drawn from among Asian specialists on various university campuses as well as master teachers who have demonstrated their effectiveness in middle and high school classrooms.

For the eleventh year, Furman University will hold a residential SCCTA graduate seminar on its campus in Greenville, SC from June 18-23, 2017.

Teachers who had completed an SCCTA seminar were eligible for subsidized 8-10 day study tours to Asia in the summers of 2005, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016. Future such study tours are under consideration.
