Eat Well

Choose a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean proteins, and unsaturated fats.  In this section, learn the basics about healthy eating, meal ideas, tips for navigating the supermarket, and how to find healthier items when dining on campus.  Our Recipe Corner provides over 50 healthy menus complete with nutritional analyses, tips, and shopping lists.  Learn how to purchase fresh produce from the Furman Farm through the Community Supported Agriculture Program or Randy Blackwell Farm Stand.

 

Get Moving

Incorporate regular physical activity into your day.  In this section you will find a schematic of the Herman W. Lay Physical Activities Center (PAC) that designates which muscles are used by each machine.  There are also demonstrations of over 160 different exercises that can be performed in the PAC and example workout plans for beginners and more advanced exercisers.  Find a link to the Furman Group Exercise Program.  Campus maps detail routes for outdoor walking, running, and or cycling.

 

Manage Weight 

Learn how to achieve a healthy rate of weight loss.  Assess your body composition with Body Mass Index and Abdominal Circumference measures.  Establish a realistic weight loss goal and estimate how many calories you need.  Tackle the behaviors that are creating barriers to your success by learning the ABCs of behavior change.  Discover strategies for success and learn from the success of others in the National Weight Control Registry. 

 

Manage Stress

Achieve a balance between positive and negative stressors.  Discover how stress affects your body and incorporate strategies to manage your stress and time more effectively.  Learn how sleep affects your health and behaviors to help improve your sleep.

 

Reduce Your Risk

Discover disease overviews for heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, and osteoporosis.  Learn how early detection improves the prognosis of disease and simple lifestyle changes that can help reduce your risk.  See how cigarette smoking affects your health and kick the cigarette habit for good.
