Dialing Instructions for Students
While you likely have a cellular phone that you will choose for most of your calling, Furman provides access to a landline in your residence. Some students choose not to install a telephone set into the residence jack, but you should consider that a set on the wall may serve as a safety net in the case of an emergency.
Each residence hall room has one telephone jack, for which you must provide your own telephone. With the exception of the North Village apartments, each room has only one jack, so you should coordinate with your roommate. Cordless phones are not recommended and tend to be unreliable when used in this environment.

Long Distance (Toll) calls:
- To dial long distance, you must have a calling card or be prepared to use a credit card or make a collect call. Calling card calls are made by dialing the toll-free number provided by your calling card provider and following their instructions.
- Credit card and collect calls may be made by dialing the toll-free number supplied by your credit card company or preferred collect call vendor and following their instructions.
- You may also use third-party billing options offered by the long distance companies. For example: Dial 9+0+area code and number and wait for the Qwest operator. (9+01+country code and number for international calls). For other long distance companies, dial 9 + your preferred carrier's access code + 0+area code and number. (e.g. AT&T is 10288.)
- You must not attempt to charge phone calls or other services to the Furman telephone number assigned to you (or to any other Furman telephone number). Such use is prohibited and blocked. However, some unscrupulous companies will accept such charges which then appear on Furman's telephone bill. We consider these to be fraudulent charges and will take disciplinary action if appropriate.
