Life Cycle for University-owned Computers

Computer purchases

University policy 370.1 for "Purchasing" designates Computing and Information Services as having purchasing responsibility for computer hardware/software, telecommunication equipment, and multimedia equipment. Computing and Information Services also maintains the inventory of University-owned computers. The University generally purchases a new computer for one of these reasons:

  • replacement of a computer designated as being on the "replacement cycle"
  • an approved and budgeted addition to University's inventory of computers on the replacement cycle, or
  • a computer purchased with grant funding (generally not added to the replacement cycle)

The University only purchases computer equipment that is Energy Star compliant.

Replacement cycle

The University expects computers used in classrooms and computer labs to be replaced after three years of use. Other University computers, such as those used by the majority of faculty and staff, are expected to be replaced after four years of use.

Computer replacement requests

Faculty and staff who believe the use of their computer has been used for longer than the replacement cycle may request a new computer by calling the CIS Help Desk. Computers will be replaced following the CIS Office Computer Procedures.

Surplus computers and recycling

Computers that have been replaced must be returned to Computing and Information Services. Computing and Information Services follows procedures outlined in University policy 371.1 for "Property Control".
