Digitization Standards
The Furman Digicenter maintains high quality standards. Because we often digitize old, delicate, or unique items, it is important that we create high quality digital objects. We typically scan objects at the following resolutions:
- Slides: 2400 DPI
- Photographs: 600 DPI
- Black and White Text Documents: 500 DPI
- Color Text Documents: 300 DPI
We save scanned images in the TIFF format, which is a file type that preserves image quality. When we upload images into a digital collection, they are converted into the JPEG-2000 format. JPEG-2000 takes up less storage space, loads faster and is a more efficient format for our web-based digital collections. Materials are usually ready to be returned to the project partner after they have been digitized.
