There are plenty of opportunities for students from different backgrounds and different interests to join our prestigious school. We have our share of superstar students, and we also have plenty of regular, really smart students here as well. So apply. Let's get to know one another.
To be considered for admission, you must send a copy of your final college transcript(s) to our admission office. This transcript should reflect completed courses through the end of your current term. If you have less than one year of college coursework, we recommend that you submit a final high school transcript.
We do not have a set requirement for transfer admission. Furman is a liberal arts institution, and we value the student’s choice to select his or her courses of interest. We are looking for students who are academically prepared, are highly motivated to succeed, and who are able to approach problems from various viewpoints. The transfer student’s average GPA is between a 3.3 and a 3.5.
Optional test scores
We believe that your potential for success cannot be determined solely by standardized test scores. As a result, our admission process is test optional, meaning you are not required to submit SAT or ACT scores.
If you feel like your test scores are a strong representation of your academic accomplishments, then we are happy to review the scores. If you do decide to submit your test scores and submit multiple test results, we will select the scores that offer you the greatest advantage in the admission review process. Furman's school code for the SAT and TOEFL is 5222, and the code for ACT is 3858.
We're often asked how many and what types of extracurricular activities you should be involved in. There is no "should" for extracurricular activities. The purpose of listing them is to help us get to know you through your interests and participation outside of the classroom.
We're looking for commitment, leadership, and passion. While we do like to see that students have been involved in activities at a deeper level (for instance, they have participated in the same club for several years and have been able to take on leadership roles in it), we're also aware that not all students can be the team captain or student body president. Taking a leadership role or participating in activities that relate to each other gives us a better picture of what kinds of activities matter to you and the experiences and passions you'll bring to Furman's campus.
Optional recommendation letters
A recommendation letter allows those who know you best to tell us about your character. That said, you don't need a letter from everyone who has ever known you. Instead, pick a few people (preferably not family members) who know you in different ways—teachers, employers, coaches, or any leaders of clubs, groups, or organizations that you are involved with.
Optional supplementary materials
If you have an extraordinary talent or skill that cannot be adequately conveyed through the application, please feel free to submit supplemental material. Supplements may include musical selections, artwork, DVDs of a performance or event, or a small sample of academic work. In recent years, students have also submitted links to personal blogs, YouTube accounts, and in some cases, iTunes tracks.
What else do you want us to know about you? Use the essay portion of your application to tell us! Consider the content of your application, and then write about something else in your essay. Write in your own voice, and focus on an aspect of your life that will help us get to know you.
Apply for our transfer scholarship
We recommend that you reserve some time to complete the Alden Transfer Scholarship, a full-tuition scholarship exclusively for transfer students. The deadline to apply for this scholarship is January 15.
Our approach to admission is holistic, and so is our method of evaluating financial aid applications, as the average award is comprised of scholarships, loans, grants, and work study. The financial aid package differs for every student depending upon a variety of factors.
If you’d like an estimate of the amount of aid you’d be awarded, check out our net price calculator. Keep in mind, though, that this estimate is dependent upon the answers that you give and could vary depending upon any scholarships you may receive.
