Recreation and Sports
With about 2,600 students, Furman is one of the smallest NCAA Division I schools in the nation. Yet Furman is a feared competitor, its teams often ranking in the top 5 of the conference.

Furman boasts one of the most active
intramural sports and club sports programs in the nation. In fact, roughly two-thirds of the
student body participate in intramural sports. This compares favorably
to almost any college or university. Fraternities, sororities, residence
hall groups and many other student organizations compete in intramural
sports, including basketball, bowling, cornhole, flag football, indoor
soccer, kickball, sand volleyball, soccer, softball, tennis, ultimate
frisbee, and volleyball throughout the year. Championships are awarded
and the games can be quite spirited. But if intramural sports doesn't
quite satisfy your competitive itch, you can always try a club sport.
One of the fastest growing segments of the university, Furman offers 23
sports for the students:
Aikido
Baseball
Basketball
Cycling
Equestrian (Dressage and IHSA)
Fencing
Golf
Hockey
Lacrosse (M&W)
Power-lifting
Rugby (M&W)
Soccer (M&W)
Swimming
Table Tennis
Tennis
Triathlon
Ultimate Frisbee
Volleyball
(M&W)
Many of the participants in
these programs take their sport as seriously as scholarship athletics.
The teams are also well coached and organized. Most of the club sports
at Furman are coordinated or coached by Furman faculty and staff, some
of whom still compete and are recognized as top authorities in their
sport.
