Merit-based Scholarships
Furman offers a number of scholarships to students who demonstrate strong ability based on their academic achievements, or who are gifted in other areas. Each year we offer more than 100 renewable academic scholarships to freshmen.
Be sure to review our
application deadlines before applying. Unless otherwise specified, these all have separate applications that are due
January 15, no matter under which decision you apply. Notification of all scholarship winners is
April 1. Therefore, if your decision is dependent upon financial assistance from Merit-based Scholarships, we believe that either applying Early Action or Regular Decision would be a better choice for you, allowing you to compare financial aid packages from a number of schools in the spring rather than committing yourself now through an early binding agreement.

Herman W. Lay Scholarships
Awarded to four incoming students each year who have displayed exceptional academic achievement and distinctive personal accomplishment. Provides full tuition, weighted average room costs, board and student fees worth more than $200,000 over four years.

Awarded to 10 incoming students each year who have displayed exceptional academic achievement and distinctive personal accomplishment. Provides full tuition worth approximately $156,000 over four years.

John D. Hollingsworth Scholarships
Awarded to 20 incoming students from South Carolina who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and a strong commitment to their communities. Includes a renewable $25,000 scholarship, study away stipend of $1000, $1500 stipend for a summer internship or research experience, and participation in the Public Leadership Seminars, which connect students with government and civic leaders.

Awarded to 10 incoming students outside of South Carolina who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and a strong commitment to their communities. Includes a renewable $25,000 scholarship, study away stipend of $1000, $1500 stipend for a summer internship or research experience, and participation in the Public Leadership Seminars, which connect students with government and civic leaders.

The Alden Transfer Scholarship is a full tuition, two-year scholarship for transfer students.
Art Scholarships
Competitive scholarships awarded on the basis of portfolio submissions. Prospective students must submit portfolios to the head of the
Art Department.
Renewable scholarships of up to $2,000 for students planning a career in the chemical industry or planning to pursue a Ph.D. in chemistry.
Exploration of Vocational Ministry Scholarships
Available to students exploring a career in full-time faith-based ministry. For details, contact Furman’s
Chaplain's Office.Renewable scholarships awarded to entering freshmen who indicate teaching as their career goals.
Renewable $8,000 scholarships awarded to intended business administration, economics and computer science majors in their freshman years.
Merit-based Legacy Scholarships
Five competitive, renewable $25,000 scholarships available to incoming students who have indicated on the application supplement that a parent or grandparent attended Furman University. To be eligible for this scholarship, the applicant must complete a FAN interview, as well as the Merit-based Legacy Scholarship application.
Renewable scholarships awarded to entering freshmen with a passion for and commitment to the Mock Trial activity and a desire to participate in Furman's Mock Trial program.
Music Scholarships
Competitive scholarships awarded on the basis of auditions held in December, February and March. For more information, contact the
Music Department.Renewable scholarships awarded to entering freshmen with a commitment to poverty studies and a desire to complete the Poverty Studies interdisciplinary minor.
ROTC Scholarships
Army ROTC scholarships are available to selected students for up to four years. The scholarships are valued up to full tuition and fees plus a monthly stipend during the academic year. Recipients of ROTC scholarships may qualify for additional Furman scholarship or grant assistance for on-campus room and board costs. For more information, contact the

Renewable fellowships for students who agree to teach in South Carolina one year for every year they receive the fellowship. For an application and deadline information, visit

Renewable scholarships awarded to entering freshmen with a commitment to sustainability and a desire to major in Sustainability Science.
Renewable scholarships awarded to entering freshmen with a commitment to theatre arts and a desire to major in Theatre Arts at Furman.
Renewable scholarships awarded to entering freshmen with outstanding mathematical ability and a combined SAT score of at least 1350.
