Accepted Students: Final Things to Consider

We understand that making your college decision isn’t easy. But as you consider your choices, we hope you will keep a few things in mind.

First, a handful of statistics:

  • Furman is ranked among the top 40 liberal arts institutions in the nation.
  • 70 percent of Furman students will reach graduate or professional school within five years of graduating.
  • 97 percent of our faculty have the highest degree in their field.
  • Our alumni include CEOs and chairpersons of companies like PepsiCo and Delta Airlines, as well as a U.S. Secretary of Education, a Nobel Prize winner, a state governor and two U.S. congressmen.

And now, two stories:

Consider Ashley Ginn.
When she left her high school in Boone, N.C., Ashley had never driven her car on an interstate. Now, as she graduates from Furman, she has traveled the world, earned a customized degree, overseen the operation of one of Furman’s largest student organizations (along with what seems like a billion other commitments) and racked up impressive honors like Who’s Who Among Students in America Universities and Colleges and the Winston Babb Award. Hear ideas about community service and keeping yourself organized through Ashley's video tour.

Or Amer Ahmad,
a Greenville native and political science major who has led Furman’s Mock Trial team to a national top ten ranking, was recently elected president of the Association of Furman Students, and interned as a “body man” for John Edwards’ 2004 vice presidential campaign. Amer also traveled to Chile for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference, interned with the South Carolina Center for Equal Justice, and is a member of College Democrats.

The Tools to Make Your Mark

So the question is; would Ashley or Amer have gone as far at another university? While it’s impossible to tell for certain, we do know that Furman presented Amer and Ashley with the same wide-ranging opportunities that could now be yours. Whether it’s active classrooms, internships, study abroad opportunities, student research, faculty commitment to education and your academic success or dedication to keeping students abreast of technology in the 21st century, Furman gives you the tools to make your mark. Just like Ashley and Amer.
