Undergraduate research
Ask our faculty about the most outstanding feature of their departments’ programs, and undergraduate research is at the top of the list. We have a commitment to involving all of our students in a first-rate research experience. While not mandatory, research is strongly encouraged, and participation in our summer research programs is one of the highest among the nation’s liberal arts colleges.
Beyond mere numbers, however, we believe our overall approach to undergraduate research across the disciplines is second to none. Professors serve as mentors and work as collaborative partners—at times more as colleagues—examining, creating, and sharing new knowledge. Faculty involve you in research and help you initiate your own projects. Furman offers laboratory research in the sciences, field research and text-based research in the humanities, field research in the natural and social sciences, and creative research projects in the arts.
