Welcome

The sociology department is happy to announce the arrival of Dr. Aaron Passell to our little tribe. Dr. Passell has an undergraduate degree in from Wesleyan College, where he majored in sociology and French literature. His PHD in sociology is from New York University (2007). He has recently taught at Muhlenberg College and the University of Pennsylvania. He has a book coming out shortly with Routledge on the new urbanism movement. His research examines the interplay of various forms of urban development with the physical environment and culture. His teaching interests include questions about the social construction of gender and race, differing concepts of class in the United States, and the sociological analysis of the city. He will be teaching urban sociology, among other courses, and be involved with the Poinsett Highway Corridor Project. He is also an avid noontime basketball player and youth soccer coach.

  • Sociology students present research at Conference
    Seven sociology students: Cierra Riddle, Catherine Harmon, Wellsley Radecke, Sophie Varn,  Jenna Barnett, Mallory Boyd, and Kristen Werner all presented research at the 2012 annual meeting of the Southern Sociological Society.  Faculty members Paul Kooistra, Allison Hurst, Ken Kolb, and Kyle Longest  attended and presented their own work as well.
