Faculty development Shi Center

At the Shi Center for Sustainability, we work with faculty from all departments, helping them integrate sustainability in their coursework and research. If you're interested in teaching sustainability, connect with us.

Affiliate faculty program

We have established an affiliate faculty program to promote and support interdisciplinary research and collaborations around sustainability. The 58 affiliates represent 19 of the 24 academic departments at Furman. Meet our faculty affiliates.

The Shi Center offers three research fellowships annually to allow faculty to conduct sustainability-related research that intersects with their disciplines.  Recipients of research fellowships use their work in future classes and submit an article for publication or conference presentation in the year following the fellowship. Begin the application process here: Faculty Fellowship 2019.

Additionally, the Center disburses funding from external partners to help faculty develop research and coursework on specific sustainability topics. This funding typically supports course development, faculty-student research projects, and professional development.

Recent Center projects have produced resources to support scholarship and teaching on innovative topics. Explore food systems and farming in the Carolinas and investigate Full Cost Analysis as a toolkit for assessing sustainability.

The Shi Center facilitates workshops which bring faculty together in interdisciplinary groups to develop ideas, methodology and pedagogical techniques. Our goal is to advance the integration of innovative sustainability topics into the curriculum here at Furman and on campuses across the country.
