      Course preparation focuses on environmental writing and ecocriticism, American literature (mainly 1620-1880), autobiography, ekphrastic poetry.

      Other courses on American literature have ecocritical moments, components. For example, in the senior seminar on Whitman and Dickinson, our discussion may lead us into a discussion of a Dickinson poem in which her speaker considers whether she or a spider is the proper inhabitant of an outhouse. Then we'll consider Whitman's "This Compost," which is a poem that describes and accepts being human as part of natural processes.)
