  • Current disciplinary research interests

My anthropological field research explores educational practices, cultural heritage politics, NGOs, and social change in Chinese urban and rural societies. Much of my research has involved working with the Na (Moso) people located in tourist zones around Lugu Lake as well as in villages farther from the tourist zones, often using photography and videography to spur conversations.

  • Interest in connecting sustainability to research

My research in Na communities of southwest China involves social sustainability and resilience. I'm interested in helping community members across different boundaries, whether geographic or otherwise, better understand one another. The sustainability lens is something that effectively crosses those boundaries.

  • Center-funded research projects

Projects include "Resilience in Mountainous Southwest China: Adopting a Socio-Ecological Approach to Community Change," "Food Systems and Farming in Southwest China and South Carolina," and the Chinese Environmental Film Festival.

  • Sustainability courses taught

My first-year writing seminar, FYW 1169: Debunking the Myths of China, discusses environment and sustainability in China. ANT-101, Introduction to Cultural Anthropology, and ANT-210, Anthropology of China, also cover ecology and environment-related topics.
