  • Current disciplinary research interests

My interests inside my own discipline of Classics include Latin poetry (especially elegy), ancient educational practices and rhetoric, and a burgeoning interest in ancient agricultural writing (especially as it reveals ancient attitudes to the environmental sustainable or unsustainable models of resource use).

  • Interest in connecting sustainability to research

At a very basic level, my interest in the environment and sustainability stems from a desire to understand better what life was really like in the ancient world.  Life in ancient times implies a much closer relationship with the natural world, and a much more difficult itme acquireing and efficiently using natural resources.  That early interest has grown, and one of my current research areas is how environmental thought - usually overlooked - in fact pervades the writings of Greek and Roman authors.  I am also intrigued by the comparison of ancient and modern responses to similar environmental issues, sustainability chief among them.
