  • Current disciplinary research interests

Literature and Environment (Posthumanist studies and landscape aesthetics) Science and Technology Studies (horology, civil engineering, urban planning, early geotheory and life sciences) 18C and 19C British Anglophone Literature (transatlantic romanticisms)

  • Interest in connecting sustainability to research

My research engages questions that are quite similar to those investigated by my students. The title of my book project is Technologies of the Sublime. It questions the stark split between romanticism and the technologic in order to reveal what stands to be lost in an all too simple "natural" understanding of the human being.

  • Sustainability courses taught
      • Eng 305 - Intro to Romanticism – students examine how a romantic alignment of humanity and nature informs current ecological debates, problems, and issues.
      • FYW 1204 – Human Animal or Human Machine? – students explore definitions of the human being that swerve from the Mechanist/Deist Philosophers of the Enlightenment to Romanticism's organic vitalists and on to contemporary postmodern/posthuman thought, which profoundly challenges Enlightenment- and Romantic-based assumptions of the superiority of the human subject, especially in light of ecocritical concerns.
