Our history Shi Center

The establishment of the Shi Center in 2008 is just one of many progressions on Furman's road towards sustainability. Over the course of the last two decades, Furman has made significant strides in all facades of sustainability. Our commitment was catalyzed by the passion and leadership of David E. Shi, the university's president from 1996 to 2010.

Our milestones

1996 - The Board of Trustee's designates environmental responsibility as an explicit priority of the university's new strategic plan, Furman 2001

2002 - Construction is completed on Hipp Hall, the first LEED certified building in South Carolina

2004 - Furman's latest strategic plan, Engaging the Future, designates sustainability as one of the five pillars of the university

2006 - Furman dedicates 2006 to be its "Year of the Environment"

2007 - President Shi becomes a charter signatory of the President's Climate Commitment as Furman records its first greenhouse gas inventory

2008 - Construction is completed on the Southern Living Showcase Home, which will become the David E. Shi Center for Sustainability

2008 - Furman implements a new curriculum that requires students to take at least one course dealing with Humans and the Natural Environment

2009 - The Board of Trustees approves Furman's Sustainability Master Plan. The plan, titled Sustainable Furman, includes 8 goals and over 90 strategies for making Furman a more sustainable institution

2010 - Furman faculty approve the addition of a Sustainability Science Major to the curriculum

2011 - Furman is a charter partner for the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System. (STARS) is a self-reporting framework for universities to measure their sustainability performance

2026 - Furman's goal date for being a carbon emissions neutral campus
