Faculty development

At the Shi Center for Sustainability, we work with faculty from all departments, helping them integrate sustainability in their coursework and research. If you're interested in teaching sustainability, connect with us.

Affiliate faculty program

We have established an affiliate faculty program to promote and support interdisciplinary research and collaborations around sustainability. The 53 affiliates represent 19 of the 24 academic departments at Furman.

Faculty Research Fellowship Program

Funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Faculty Research Fellowship program offers an opportunity for faculty to conduct sustainability-related research that intersects with their disciplines. An interdisciplinary, anonymous faculty committee selects the research fellows based on each project's originality, relevance for sustainability, and potential for campus and community impact. Recipients of research fellowships use their work in future classes and submit an article for publication or conference presentation in the year following the fellowship.  Meet our faculty fellows.

Development workshop

From 2009-2011, we invited faculty from Furman and neighboring schools to participate in our faculty development workshop, “Infusing Sustainability into the Existing Curriculum.” Funded by the Andrew Mellon Foundation, our workshop brought faculty together for two days to talk about how to weave sustainability into their courses and to foster a sustainable learning community.

This workshop model is widely used around the US.  Unlike these programs, we measure changes in student knowledge about sustainability as a result of the course modifications made by our faculty workshop participants. Learn more about our workshop.
