Africa study away with Dr. Hahn
Erin Hahn participated in the spring semester study away program to southern Africa along with 20 Furman students and three other members of the Furman faculty. The program, directed by Dr. Kristy Maher in the Sociology Department, included classes on Poverty and Child Development, Global Health Inequalities, Photography, and Theatre. Over the course of nine weeks, the group traveled throughout South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana. Brain development, malnutrition, culture, HIV/AIDS, and resiliency were among the many issues discussed in Dr. Hahn’s class on Poverty and Child Development. While in country the students met with academic researchers, visited local organizations dedicated to improving the lives of children, spent time at orphanages, and learned about the day-to-day lives of children through three homestay experiences.
Another iteration of the program is scheduled for the spring of 2015. Read more information about the program.
