John B. Watson Remembered

 Although Watson's resignation from Hopkins left him ostracized by the academic community, he received a citation from the American Psychological Association in 1957 for his contributions to psychology. 

In April 1979, a symposium at Furman honored the centennial of Watson's birth.  Guest lecturers included James V. McConnell, Fred S. Keller, and B. F. Skinner.  The symposium was attended by more than 2000 people from all over the United States.

  

The psychology labs at Furman were given Watson's name, as the most distinguished alumnus of the department.

  

In 1984, Watson was inducted into the South Carolina Hall of Science and Technology and a commemorative marker was set up on U.S. Highway 276 near Watson's childhood home in Travelers Rest, South Carolina.   The person on the left in this picture is Jim Watson, son of J. B. Watson.  And on the right is Scott Watson, Jim's son.
