French, Jeffrey
I turned in the hat and boots soon after Furman and married Karyn Rice,
sociology class of 1996. After 1 year at Baptist Theological Seminary
at Richmond (long story), I spent 2 years as a zookeeper (birds) at
Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, then got my MS in Biology from USC
(evolution of feathers, among other things). Somewhere in there I
taught human anatomy at Midlands Tech for 3 years. I spent 5 years
developing and managing Professional Science Master's programs at USC,
particularly in biotechnology and bioinformatics, including 3 terms
teaching a class I created called Scientific and Technological Problems
in Business and Industry. Now I'm back to PhD research at USC, hoping
to be done by 2007-2008. I'm temporarily back at the zoo to pay the
bills, this time taking care of elephants and sea lions and other large
mammals. My research focus is in molecular evolution and
bioinformatics. My most recent work with my faculty advisor, accepted
by the journal Gene, is entitled "Homologous Recombination and the
Pattern of Nucleotide Substitution in Ehrlichia ruminantium". My wife
wonders if I will ever actually start a career.
