The Pre-Law Society is the official student organization that provides both academic and educational resources for students interested in going to law school. This student directed society is open to any student who is interested in learning about the legal profession. The Pre-Law Society annually sponsors guest speakers from the legal profession; sends students to regional pre-law forums and conferences; organizes bi-annual trips to attend hearings of either the South Carolina Supreme Court or The Supreme Court of the United States; and offers informational programs built around pre-law career opportunities and the discussion of contemporary legal issues. Students who are interested in the pre-law program should make it a priority to get involved with the Pre-Law Society during their first year at Furman. Become a member of the Pre-Law Society.
The Furman Legal Clinic is a comprehensive program offering practical legal experience for members of the Pre-Law Society. The legal clinic provides students with an opportunity to work with licensed attorneys on important legal cases from the local community. Students participating in this experience deliver a valuable service to the local community and benefit by gaining a better understanding of how the legal system operates. Students from all majors can become involved in one of the only legal clinical programs available at the undergraduate level. Furthermore, the legal clinic accomplishes Furman’s mission for engaged learning by providing public service in the process of gaining experiential knowledge. The legal clinic’s broad legal exposure is instructive for directing students towards a future career in practicing law.
Each semester, the legal clinic selects projects that focus on a specialized field of law such as bankruptcy, criminal defense, and family legal services. By recruiting professionals in the field, the legal clinic hosts forums and training sessions to educate participants about the logistics of the practice and how student volunteer efforts help address contemporary issues in the community.
All students interested in joining the legal clinic must be a member of the Pre-Law Society and are expected to attend regular meetings and training sessions. Contact Ms. Teresa Cosby for more information about the legal clinic.
