If you want to complete an observation program in veterinary medicine or pursue an internship at one of the nation's largest hospitals, our office has the connections to get you there.

Before pursuing a specific opportunity, be sure to familiarize yourself with your desired profession's field experience guidelines. Once you've learned the requirements, you can begin researching your options. We have provided a sampling of our students' previous observation programs and internships as well as faculty research contacts to point you in the right direction.

Profession-Specific Requirements

While medical schools have not established a minimum set of requirements for field experience, other fields have specific conditions. Review your area of interest to learn about the requirements:

  • Dental

Dental training programs ask students to complete observation programs in a variety of dental fields. Preferably, students will spend a significant amount of time shadowing a general dentist and additional hours in alternative fields such as endodontics or orthodontics.

  • Physician Assistant

Direct patient care hours are required. Students should pursue volunteer work that offers contact with patients rather than job shadowing opportunities. Most schools also set a minimum requirement of documented hours and often require certain certifications such as paramedic, EMT, and others.

  • Veterinary

Veterinary training programs ask students to complete observation programs in a range of veterinary fields. Preferably, students will spend a significant amount of time shadowing one veterinarian, working with small animals. Students should use additional hours to work in other specialties including exotics and caring for larger animals.

Here you can find a network of local and national facilities where our students have observed and interned. Keep in mind these locations represent only a portion of our students' experiences. We support clinical experiences in any health related field.
