Examination of similarities and differences between the institutions, processes and policies of selected nations, in the context of globalization and the evolution of international politics.

FYS-1210-01 Battlestar Galactica Politics
(TR 1:00-2:15 | JHN 106G)

Miniseries “Battlestar Galactica” (2003-2009) provides the launching point to explore the world of politics.  The series introduces students to ancient political questions such as: What is political community? What is justice? What is power? Who rules? It also confronts students with questions of immediate relevance: Should religion influence politics? When is armed revolt just? Is democracy always the best form of government?

PSC-380 Comparative Welfare States (Team) 

The course examines the welfare systems in economically developed democracies, particularly in the United States and Western Europe. 

PSC-322 Welfare States in America and Scandinavia (Team)
May Experience

This course examines the welfare systems in the United States and Scandinavia. Questions addressed include: What is a welfare state? Where did such states come from? What policies comprise a welfare state? What types of welfare state do we find in developed democracies? What problems face welfare states?  

PSC-122 Democracy The Scandinavian Way (Team)
May Experience

A beginner's exploration of politics and policies in the United States and Scandinavia. The course includes briefings by experts and policy makers on location.

PSC-221 Politics of the European Union

Study of the institutions, policies and processes of the European Union and the major theories of regional integration.
Prerequisite: PSC-102 

PSC-236 Political Parties 

Examination of political parties as they appear in established and emerging democracies. Special emphasis on U.S. political parties in comparative perspective.
Prerequisite: PSC-102

PSC-240 Economic and Politics Analysis of the EU (Study abroad) 

An examination of the formation, implementation and operation of the European Union, with special emphasis on political and economic issues. Taught as part of the Furman program in Europe.
Prerequisite: PSC-102

PSC-256-01 International Political Economy

The relationship between politics and economics on the national and international levels, focusing on the impact of political forces on the functioning of the international economic system.
Prerequisite: PSC-102

PSC-320 Politics of Europe

Study of political institutions, policis and processes in European democracies.
Prerequisites: PSC-102, PSC-150 

PSC-410 Senior Honors Essay 
Guided research and writing on a topic in any field of political science proposed by the student and approved by the instructor.
Prerequisite: Permission of instructor
