If you want to make a difference in the world, you have to understand
the world. When you study philosophy at Furman, you will study philosophy in its historical context, applied contexts, and from a global perspective.
Philosophy at Furman isn’t a spectator sport. Our professors want to
hear your arguments and opinions. You will travel with your professors
around campus, into the community, and throughout the world on to experience
real-world examples of philosophy at work. Philosophy will also help you examine why you are passionate about the things you are passionate about and can help you to gain a deeper understanding of your career skills. The result--you will be able to choose a career (and a life!) you love, not just another job.
We’ve also added a senior honor’s thesis program to help our students if they want to continue with advanced philosophical study in graduate school. You can apply for the program your junior year and spend your senior year working closely with a professor on a topic. The end result is a paper you’ll hopefully be able to submit for publication and present publicly at conferences.
We want to know who you are and what you're passionate about. Visit our admission site to fill out the Common Application. Apply today.
The best way to learn about our program is to come to campus and see our department in action. You'll meet our faculty and hear about the program from current students. You can schedule a classroom visit through the admission office. Visit us.
Our faculty pursue research and attend national conferences, but they're never too busy to mentor you. Meet our philosophy faculty.
