Life of a Furman Alumni

  • My career:

I'm a finance real estate underwriter so I finance apartment buildings, work on loan applications, size the debt on these properties, talk to clients regularly, make sure all the required due diligence is correct. Every day is different.

  • How Furman helped me get there:

The small class sizes at Furman and being a philosophy major, you deal with difficult topics and polarizing opinions. You have confrontation and you can be pushed and you have to be able to understand and defend your position.

  • How does a liberal arts background help you in your current position?

I think when people look at philosophy they think you're going to be an academic and get your PhD in philosophy and teach or go to law school, but I think its important to understand there's value in the degree beyond what's traditionally thought of it. All my grad school professors all told me you can learn to use things like Excel post grad, but the core things you learn as a philosophy major and in the liberal arts are harder to learn after college. You learn how to think, read critically, and quickly understand an argument.
