Every professor is awesome. No matter who you come in contact with, they're all amazing. I'd be more than happy to take any class with any of them.

Why Philosophy? I had no intentions of being a philosophy major; I thought I was going to do psychology. After taking my first class it was the best thing I ever experienced. I'm interested in going to law school so I decided to double major in political science.

Life as a philosophy major

  • Best experience in the philosophy department:

Every professor is awesome. No matter who you come in contact with, they're all amazing. I'd be more than happy to take any class with any of them.

  • Favorite Class:

Introduction to philosophy because that's what gave me direction.

  • Study away experience:

I did the Religion and Art in Turkey May Experience and it was amazing. Those are topics I don't have time to study because I'm a double major, so doing something outside my typical major was really great.

Helpful Tips

  • Choosing a major:

Take your general education requirements early on in a wide range of things. You'll still be making progress toward graduation, but you'll get exposed to new things. I took introduction to philosophy as my ultimate question requirement and I loved it and decided to make it my major.

  • Studying:

Turn off your Internet or block the sites you'll procrastinate on, start earlier than you think you should, create a list and don't do anything else until you accomplish it, be held accountable by something else.

  • Making friends:

Get involved with O-week. You'll meet a lot of people that way. The freshman hall does a good job helping you meet people so get involved in your hall activities. You can also ask people in your class to go study with you.

  • Living on campus:

Don't assume things will be the same way it was in your house and be open to compromise. Most people are reasonable so be open and honest with people. Talk out your problems instead of hoping things will go your way and being upset when they don't.
