Furman University is excited to announce a new program for current music educators, the Jazz Education Workshop. The mission is to help our region’s music teachers to enhance their jazz education skills, with the hope that jazz education will become a bigger part of our school music programs. We really hope you will join us and also spread the word about our new workshop!

The Basics

Date: Saturday, December 10, 2016, 9 AM – 4 PM

Furman University Daniel Music Building, Room D13

$65 per person, which includes lunch.
Register on-line first, then submit payment by mail or call the music office for no-fee card payments. Checks payable to FURMAN UNIVERSITY.
Application deadline December 1. Refundable if minimum enrollment not met.

Professional Development Credit

If you wish to apply to your school district for any sort of re-certification or professional development credit, please make sure we know what documentation you require, and we will be happy to provide it.

Required Materials   

Please purchase a copy of Jamey Aebersold’s play-along Volume 54 Maiden Voyage, as we will use it during the workshop. You should be able to purchase this at our area music stores and also online on Jamey’s website (https://goo.gl/HG9mpX) or Amazon (https://goo.gl/HwbCuW).

Workshop Schedule (DRAFT)

9:15-11:00  Jazz Improvisation
11:00-noon Swing Style, Big Band Techniques, Jazz Combo Techniques
12-1:00pm  Lunch break (included in fee)
1:00-2:00    Jazz History and Listening
2:00-3:30    Jazz rhythm section techniques – specific instruction on each instrument from
rhythm section specialists
3:30-4:00    Interactive faculty performance

Other Info   

Bring your instruments, as you will play during our workshop! No prior jazz or improvisation experience needed. You will learn some basic skills in a supportive environment. If you are a drummer, bring mallets and be prepared to play vibes. Also, bring your questions!!!
