Adjunct Instructor, World Music

In addition to serving as executive director of the Cradle of Jazz Project, Julie serves as adjunct professor at Furman University (World Music). Her specialty is the Mande world and Trans Atlantic diaspora, with a special interest in childhood bi-musical education. A secondary area of interest is the transfer of the Hindustani Raag to the cello.

She is an active member of the Mande Studies Association and the African Studies Association. As a nationally certified cello teacher in the Suzuki method, Julie runs a successful music studio in Taylors SC, serving as the secretary of the South Carolina Suzuki Music Association, and chair of its Upstate chapter. In all of these roles, she is a faithful advocate for the integration of Malian artists and scholars into U.S. universities.

In 2014, Julie brought Mali's only female kamalen ngoni player to the United States for her first US tour since 2008. This tour included jams with Abigail Washburn, Bela Fleck, and Toubab Krewe, and concerts/lectures throughout the South, including Duke University and Furman. Julie's current project is the 2016 Strings Showcase of Mande Melody, featuring three of Bamako's finest stringed musicians, along with the history that binds the music of the United States to theirs.
