The Wind Ensemble is an elite concert band combining the top 50 wind,
brass, and percussion students, both majors and non-majors. The Wind Ensemble studies and performs a combination of both new and quintessential wind ensemble literature. Membership is determined by audition at the
beginning of each term. The Wind Ensemble meets twice a week in the spring. Membership
fulfills the music scholarship large ensemble requirement.
The Wind Ensemble has recently performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City, the American Bandmasters Association National Conference, the South Carolina Music Educators Association In-Service Convention, the Chicago International Music Festival at Symphony Hall and the College Band Directors National Association Southern Division Conference in Jacksonville, Fla. The Symphonic Band is Furman's largest concert band and is open to
music majors and non-majors. In addition to performing at the spring concert, the Symphonic Band performs
at Furman's spring commencement ceremony.
The band was founded in 1920 and is one of the oldest organized college bands in the South. Each year, this band travels to communities in South Carolina and bordering states. In 1987, the band toured Europe as part of Greenville’s Sister City Program, culminating with participation in the Ghet Music Festival in Belgium. Meet our director.
