WHAT?
2012 marks the seventh consecutive year for the Furman Music Department’s highly successful study away program, “Music in Italy.” Each fall twelve to fourteen students, accompanied by Furman faculty members, take up a semester-long residence in Arezzo, Italy. They are taught both by Furman and Italian teachers in courses that include Conducting, Music History, and Italian language. A four-day Tuscan art study – day trips that focus on the region’s rich visual arts tradition – is led by Furman Art Professor, Robert Chance. Performance Studies (one-on-one studio instruction) is the central component of the program. Each student works closely with an accomplished Italian artist/teacher who helps prepare them for performances that take place in a variety of configurations and venues. Participation in the program is open to music majors in all degree programs and to non-majors with significant musical backgrounds.
WHEN?
The program takes place during the fall semester, with students departing in early September and returning in early December. There is a ten-day mid-semester break built into the schedule that allows ample time for students to visit other parts of Italy or other European destinations.
WHERE?
Arezzo is a small city in southeastern Tuscany, located nearly mid-way between Florence and Sienna.
It is surrounded by picturesque hills that boast centuries-old vineyards and olive groves.
Arezzo has a well-preserved medieval walled center and many beautiful churches and other buildings that date back to the 12th century.
Arezzo was recently used as a location for Roberto Begnini’s Ocsar-winning film “Life is Beautiful.”
Located on Italy’s main north/south rail line, Arezzo is less than an hour away from Florence and its art and archetectural treasures, and only slightly further away from Rome.
Multiple-day field trips to Rome and Venice are included in the program.
ACCOMODATIONS?
Our program is based at the Accademia dell’Arte, which makes its home in the beautiful Villa Godiola, a 16th century former bishop’s palace. The Villa, which has a commanding view of the dramatic Tuscan landscape, is flanked by its own olive groves and grape vines. The recently renovated rooms are bright and spacious, each containing study space, two single beds and an en-suite bathroom. The Accademia also houses multiple classroom, studios and practice room spaces. Three generous and delicious meals per day, Monday through Friday, are prepared and served by the resident staff in the Accademia’s dining hall.
