Meet T.J.

I decided in high school I wanted to be a musician, but I didn't know the steps to get there. I was approached by a Furman alumnus who told me Furman has one of the best music programs in the U.S. They suggested I see the campus and audition. At my audition, I saw the warmth of the faculty and I knew I wanted to come to Furman.

Life as a music major

  • Why did you decide to become a music major?

Music is my most powerful talent. It's one of those things I have done just for the joy of making people happy. I don't think I could do that in any other field.

  • Why did you pursue Exploration of Vocational Ministry?

At first, it was about becoming a better leader in church. But really, this organization has broadened my perspective. My beliefs have become inclusive instead of exclusive. The ministry opens your mind to different cultures.

  • Best experience in the department

Either the oratorio or jazz ensemble. The oratorio brings so many musicians together and the jazz ensemble is the only time I've played music written by men of my culture. That's essential to me.

  • Favorite class

Furman Singers. I like the collaboration aspect and being under a great director like Dr. Hugh Ferguson Floyd. I've learned so much from his style of teaching. We've sung great music and have had the chance to sing under guest directors like John Nelson. We've had experiences we'll never forget.

  • Career goals

I want to be a choral director. Right now, I direct the choir at two churches in Greenville: Allen Church and St. Mark Methodist.

  • Study away experience

I went to Arezzo, Italy with the music department. That whole experience taught me to seize the moment because people in Italy think very differently than we do in the United States. If you don't enjoy the moment, then what's the purpose of it?

Best of List

  • Favorite activity

I like to walk around downtown. I also go to Frankie's Fun Park a lot.

  • Best thing about Greenville

There's no limit to how much the arts can grow in this city.

  • Favorite place to eat

Sticky Fingers in downtown Greenville. It's a cool place for all ages and I like the chicken and barbecue.

  • Favorite Furman tradition

Singing "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "Brown Eyes" at the end of every Furman Singers concert. "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" is a sentimental song for me as a black male and the fact that it's one of Furman's theme songs reminds me that I've been shown the love and respect that I need.

Helpful Tips

  • Choosing a major

It's about your passion. What's the one thing you think about every day and you can't live without? If you can't live without it, that might be what you need to be doing.

  • Getting involved on campus

Don't be afraid to talk to people who aren't in your year and see what they're involved in.

  • Living on campus

Make it your goal to know the entire campus by the end of your first year. When you have free time, go out and see what's around you instead of going back to your room.
