Audition and declaration requirements
Furman students intending to major in music must perform an audition and
complete a music theory placement examination. Paperwork should be
submitted to our department during your sophomore year.

General requirements
If you're looking for a greater balance between the liberal arts and music, the bachelor of arts degree in music gives you
the flexibility to take a significant number of elective courses. In fact, only about one third of your coursework will be done in the music department. In
some instances, you may be able to complete a double major.

- Two credits of performance topics
- Recital Attendance for seven semesters (MUS-050)
- Freshman Music Colloquium for one semester (MUS-051)
- Membership in at least one ensemble: Symphony orchestra (MUS-060), Furman band (MUS-061), Furman Singers (MUS-062), Furman men's chorale (MUS-063), or Furman women's chorale (MUS-064)
Additional courses for a bachelor of arts in music:
- Philosophy of Art (PHL-330), (IDS-230) or four credits in any combination from ART or THA
- Two credits of music electives
- At least eight credits of performance studies in the same instrument or voice
